JEFF Gallery is pleased to present A Chair Itself, a group exhibition of artists creating sculptural objects both useful and not. In contrast to Judd’s 1993 sentiment, rather than viewing art-making and object-making as discreet activities, for these artists there is no line between the functional and non-functional, furniture and sculpture, object and art. Rather than blurring the line between disciplines and objectives, these contemporary artists conflate it, positing a chair as both a chair and a three dimensional still life, a table as both a table and “a description of a table”. By embracing all forms of apprehension, the artists allow space for a chair to exist both “as itself” and others, challenging our idea of functional art and creating meaningful connection between art and life.
